Kolkata,the capital city, was one of the least affected cities,even then,the destruction is unimaginable. Trees have been uprooted in every street and signal posts and lamp posts have met with similar fate. Many people spent the last night without electricity, and it has not been restored completely yet.
North and South 24 Parganas have been completely devastated. Towns such as Basirhaat, Bongaon, Barasat, Barackpore and more have faced severe destruction. Almost all concrete structures have been razed to the ground. The Sundarbans,which has always saved the state from storms and cyclones has been completely ravaged.
At least 12 people have died due to the deadly cyclone and many have lost their homes. Small shops have been destroyed beyond repair while stores and even malls have been greatly affected. Crops have been ravaged.
The catastrophe has brought West Bengal,especially the southern part of the state,to a standstill. The Centre has not yet responded to the crisis of this magnitude effectively.The National Media has not yet covered the calamity as it should have been.
The Chief Minister has said, that the state is in grave danger and does not have enough funds to weather the aftermath of a super cyclone while it is in midst of a pandemic. She has begged the centre for relief.
The citizens of West Bengal have lashed out at the National Media for its refusal to acknowledge the disaster faced by an Indian state. The people are voicing their thoughts and condemning the inaction of the Centre. They are demanding swift action and response to what they think must be immediately declared a national emergency.
