Safoora Zargar, a Jamia Millia Islamia student was
arrested on April 13. The police claimed that she was one of the people who organized
the anti-CAA and road blockade under the Jafrabad Metro Station in Delhi on
February 22-23.
Safoora is in Tihar Jail charged under the Unlawful
Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). She is pregnant and questions are trending on
Twitter regarding her marital status. However, the real question that stands
tall and concrete is that why is her marital status so important? It is sad
that in India, everything ultimately comes and stops at a girl’s marital
status. Instead of being comforted and taken care of, she has been arrested and
has to battle the cruel world of social media. Some of the nasty tweets say, “Someone
give her a condom”, “Pregnant lady terrorist must not go unpunished”, “Shameless
unwed pregnant terrorist”, etc.
Her husband, however, expressed his faith in the
judiciary saying, “We believe in democracy and freedom of speech so one could
never have imagined something like this would happen… We have to have faith in
the judiciary. We hope we won’t be denied justice and that it comes sooner
rather than later.”
It’s disheartening, but true that we still fight for
freedom and independence even after 73 years in India.
