The Hypocrite’s Justice

ANSHI PANDEY

Some of the most engrossing discussions of my life have been in lines of future of Feminism or the progress in the status of females in our society. Such conversations have often times helped me gain perspective of how feminism has been perceived and accepted by our generation. Feminism is a worldwide socio-political movement which advocates the rights of women on ground of equality of the sexes. A common misconception which revolves around the phrase is the idea that an utopian society for women is one in which it dominates over the other genders.  And a fear that persists among a major segment of the population is that women will violate their rights in the judiciary wherein they will misuse loopholes. The same fear has been put to test in the past week.

During the investigation of the Bois Locker Room, an online Instagram group having only male participants, created to objectify females, another such group came to limelight. This group known as Girls Locker Room encroached the privacy of males and objectified their bodies. The participants of this group are females.  There have been multiple debates amongst young adults regarding how the media will not cover the story of the creation of Girls Locker Room, hence not portraying how this group is as much a cyber crime as is the Bois Locker Room. There is a prejudiced thought process in circulation throughout the nation that the judiciary shall not hold these females accountable for the cyber crimes they actively participated in.

Another faction of people have risen justifying the actions of these females on their need for vengeance. This mentality is a clear demonstration of hypocrisy. An individual who sees the crimes committed by the participants of the Bois Locker Room yet consciously ignores those committed by the participants of Girls Locker Room, fails to see that the punishment given to a person is not to humiliate the offender and must not be redefined by gender. The punishment for a crime needs to be seen at its face value.

As a feminist, I believe that the individuals involved in creation of platforms for humiliation and degradation of others must be held accountable for their actions despite their gender, colour, caste and creed. One must never forget the consequences of our actions reach far and wide. And that an individual’s privacy must be respected.

Editor’s Note: Girls Locker Room was equally wrong as the Boys Locker Room and it cannot be justified. It’s sad to see that people raise voice against the boys, but never speak against girls, as if they can never do such a thing. The girls, of course, didn’t talk about raping anyone, but body shaming, objectifying and sexualizing anyone is equally wrong. I am a girl and I don support it.
In the end I would like to quote a famous line trending on social media these days- “Teach your children to respect everyone.”
